MONTGOMERY WILDCATS – SUNDAY 8/26 GAMES

MONTGOMERY MIDGETS

The Montgomery Wildcats Midgets lost their season opener to the Washington Rock Rampage, 21-7. The game started out great for the Wildcats, with Brian Papsin forcing and recovering a fumble on the first play from scrimmage, deep in Washington Rock territory. That left the Wildcats with a first down and goal to go on the Rock’s nine yard line. Unfortunately, after a series of penalties, the Wildcats were not able to convert the opportunity into any points.

For the remainder of the first quarter, the Wildcats had some strong defensive plays from Jake Lipowski, Eric Pedinoff and Alex Mikrut. During the second quarter, Washington Rock scored their first points of the game, despite some hard tackles by Billy Eldridge and Andrew Hennessey, and a key sack by Chris Frezza and David Mullin. Despite these strong performances, Washington Rock scored again with seconds to go in the quarter, ending the first half with a 14-0 advantage.

Thomas Smith started off the second half with a kickoff return that put the Wildcats on their 40 yard line. On first down, Jake Lipowski carried the ball for 15 yards and another first down. However this series was short lived, after a Wildcat penalty and a quarterback sack pushed the ball back into Montgomery territory. The Rampage came back quickly and scored another 7 points.

By far the most exciting part of the Wildcat’s game came during the fourth quarter. The Rampage kickoff was returned by Frankie Aguilar to the Wildcat 45 yard line. Lipowski, Aguilar, and Mikrut then proceeded to move the ball downfield on series of running plays that resulted in the Wildcat’s first score of the game by Lipowski. Billy Eldridge hit Franky Aguilar on a short pass play for the extra point.

MONTY JR. MIDGETS

The Montgomery Wildcats Junior Midgets won their season opener 6-0, over the Washington Rock Rampage. The Wildcats started off with a strong defensive set against Washington Rock and then ran off ten straight plays gaining 51 yards when Josh Reinson was stopped at the Washington Rock 12. The drive was helped by big runs of 11 and 13 yards from Steve Bergida.

In the second quarter the Wildcats defense held up with fine stops by Brian Mayer and Josh Reinson. Monty got on the board with a touchdown pass from Ryan Boyle to Josh Reinson for 35 yards, after a nice fingertip grab by Kevin Johnson on a tough play over the middle.

The defensive highlight was a sack by Michael Boyer as he chased the Washington Rock QB for a 19 yard loss. The game ended with a tough defensive stand as the Rampage drove down to the Monty 12 yard line. The defensive unit worked hard until the end to give Coach Mo a big shutout.

MONTY PEE WEES

The Montgomery Wildcats Pee Wees opened the season with a hard fought loss to Washington Rock Rampage, 13-0. During the second quarter leading 6-0, the Rock was mounting a driven when Angelo Colarusso forced a fumble, which was recovered by Sam Oltmans. Wade Baldwin and Josh Lipowski provided some nifty running, but Monty could not sustain the drive. Rock led 6-0 at the half.

Early in the third quarter, Monty started another drive behind blocking by: CJ Gatt, Ryan Sohmer, Colarusso, and Zach Mayer. The Rock stopped the drive, but Baldwin intercepted a pass in the next series and returned it to the Rock fifteen yard line. The Rampage defense kept Monty out of the end zone.

The leading tacklers for Monty were Baldwin, Oltmans, Lipowski and Nico Rembert.

MONTY JR. PEE WEE

The Montgomery Wildcats Jr. Pee Wees lost 25-6 to Washington Rock this past weekend. Devon Meadows scored the only touchdown for the Wildcats leaving the half time score at 12-6. Chris Chugunov completed a key pass to Sean Curry to help set up the score. Offensive lineman Evan Tracey, Brett Ajamian, and Kyle McLester led the blocking attack for Montgomery. Meadows also returned kick off for 50 yards before being brought down on the Washington Rock 35 yard line.

The Defensive effort was lead by Joey DiTorrice who recorded the most tackles at Linebacker followed by Sean Curry, Gregg Shiffner, and Patrick Fritzinger. Defensive lineman Frankie Wendling, Ryan Murphy, Matt Spallucci Mike Remsen, Mike Decker and Linebacker Jake Bobal recorded tackles as well. Kyle McLester recovered a Washington Rock fumble on a punt to give the Wildcat good field position during the first half.

MONTY YELLOW FLAG

The Montgomery Wildcats Yellow flag team opened their season against the Washington Rock Rampage with a 28-21 victory. The first half began with the Wildcats testing the edges of the Rock defense with a series of sweeps and reverses. Will Marrapodi scored on a 30 yard run around the right side, led by a crucial block from Christopher Duwan. Duwan turned from blocker to runner and galloped for 20 yards of his own on a reverse, following a blocking wall led by pulling center Bailin Pollard and left guard Shane Ajamian. Rookie Mack Bloom carried the ball up the middle for a number of short runs and then found the end zone on a 30 yard run up the right sideline. Christian Boyle anchored the offense with a strong showing at quarterback, including making a number of up-field bocks. Rookie Michael Patron carried for a 10 yard run while fellow rookies Cole Sudano and Max Drift selflessly blocked whomever opposed them. Continuing to share the wealth, Reese Clark carried on a sweep off-tackle for 15 yards. On the defensive front, the Yellow team held the Rock to 2 first half touchdowns. Rookie defensive linemen Anthony Detorrice and 2nd year man Orion Flynn helped to disrupt things up-front allowing Cole Sudano, Mack Bloom, Christian Boyle and Christopher Duwan to all make important stops.

The second half was highlighted by a 40 yard touchdown run by Cole Sudano up the left sideline. While Christopher Duwan found the end zone after a 25 yard run up the right sideline. Center-turned-quarterback Bailin Pollard had a 20 yard run up the middle. On the defensive front the Yellow Flag team had a strong showing, holding their opponent to one second half touchdown. Outside linebackers Max Drift and Cole Sudano continued to force their opponents’ runners back to the middle where their teammates were there for the tackle.
