New roses offer easier planting due to more pliable roots that need smaller holes and suffer less transplant shock. Jackson & Perkins began selling roses before the turn of the century, and they are now the company's main garden product. The Jackson and Perkins research center is just outside Somis California near the coast. Each year, between 300,000 and 400,000 seedlings are grown and evaluated at the research facility. Roses are heavy feeders amd it takes a lot of energy to produce those large and magnificent blooms.
