Find hardy roses where the surviving roots enable plants to rejuvenate as the same plant variety, rather than the rootstock variety, after a hard freeze. Rose leaves develop in sets of three, five, even seven or nine leaflets. Roses like a good, deep soak to promote deep rooting and they will actually develop drought tolerance if established this way. Most modern roses, even some heirloom varieties, will bloom all summer if properly groomed. New roses offer easier planting due to more pliable roots that need smaller holes and suffer less transplant shock.
