The basis of successful organic gardening is improving the soil so that it's healthy and alive, because healthy soil grows healthy plants that resist diseases and even insects. Shade gardens can be lush and lively, beckoning a weary gardener to take time out to just enjoy the day and the results of all that hard work. Many wildflower groupings rival even our best-planned gardens for beauty and appeal. Plush peonies burst into bloom in my garden after a week of warm sun in late spring, a soft cloud of intermingled pinks, reds and whites of various shades. All fall and winter long, while skies are gray and the ground is cold and quiescent, newly planted bulbs can be setting the stage for a colorful extravaganza in your garden the following spring.
