When your soil begins to dry up in spring, grab your spade and get going: It's time to prepare your garden for planting. Composting is the process of turning garden and kitchen refuse into usable, decomposed material that makes a great soil amendment. All fall and winter long, while skies are gray and the ground is cold and quiescent, newly planted bulbs can be setting the stage for a colorful extravaganza in your garden the following spring. Plush peonies burst into bloom in my garden after a week of warm sun in late spring, a soft cloud of intermingled pinks, reds and whites of various shades. Whether they come from the florist in a bouquet, or are growing gracefully in your own garden, roses make a classic statement with their beautiful flowers and lovely fragrance.
