One of your first considerations when planning a garden should be bloom time. Bloom time, color and size are among the most common reasons for choosing plants. You may also choose them because of fragrance, texture, or culinary value. Experiment with colors by cutting a few pictures out of garden catalogs and rearranging them. Perennial tulips are special because, unlike many hybrids, they come back reliably year after year. If the sun warms the soil in the container too early, the bulb will send up shoot and flower before an adequate root system has developed.
