| John Hart of Hopewell bought a gristmill and
fulling mill at Rocky Hill in 1773. He and his son-in-law, John Polhemus,
operated both mills and Hart's son, Jesse, managed the transportation of
flour, food, and textiles.
In July 1774, Hart was elected to ft First Provincial Congress of Now
Jersey and was later sent to the Continental Congress in June 1776. He was
one of the New Jersey signers of the Declaration of Independence along
with Jefferson, Adams, Franklin and others.
